Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) Movie Review NO SPOILERS: Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Tim Burton

Say it 3 times and my movie reviews will be part of your algorithm. Just kidding.Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)is the sequel toBeetlejuice (1988). This is a live-action cartoon. It’s also a horror comedy. If you’re into that kind of humor, you’ll love this. There’s also a sprinkle of teen drama, just a pinch. I’m not into movies like this. But I was entertained. I’m planning to watch the original Beetlejuice now.

Winona Ryder plays Lydia, a host of a horror show that’s like Ghost Hunters. She is now a goth mom who is dark and brooding. Her estranged daughter is Jenna Ortega as Astrid. Lydia is also estranged to stepmom Delia played by Catherine O’Hara. Generational trauma happens to everyone. Everyone has to go back to that famous house in a small town in Connecticut because their dad died. Some people find that the way the dad died was funny. I did not. But you decide.

Beetlejuice never left the home all these years. He was trapped in the model homes to be unleashed one day back in the world. That’s kinda cool. It feels like a Stephen King plot where you have an “entity” that used to haunt people 36 years ago. But people who saw the 1988 original know it. That’s kinda cool. You also have new cast members like Monica Bellucci and Willem Defoe.

The movie feels like different movies guntacked together😉. It’s like the original Art Attack, shoutout to all my fellow 90s and 2000s kids. In Art Attack, host Niel Buchanan would prepare random objects like boxes, cloth, strings, and bags of sand. He would arrange them and it becomes an artistic kiddie art that looks like a painting. I was told that the original Beetlejuice is also like this. It’s organized chaos. And that is a feature of this movie, not a bug. I’m not a fan of that, but it’s cool. It feels like Tim Burton was having fun on this one. It also feels like there are more practical effects than CGI, and I’m a fan of that. Even in 2025, the greatest CGI in the world still looks like CGI.

In the first 20 minutes of the movie,“this is too ridiculous for me”was my mindset. But as it moves along, it’s fine. I enjoyed it more than I hate it or got bored.

The movie feels like Tim Burton going back to form. You have stop-motion animation and the colorful cartoonish weird humor. You also see more of the afterlife of this world. That’s a world in itself. Tim Burton can create a film from that.

People voted with their wallets on these movies. Beetlejuice Beetlejuice made $451 million from a $100 million budget. The original Beetlejuice made $45 million from a $15 million budget. I think the older actors like Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Monica Bellucci, Willem Defoe, and Danny Devito captured the Boomer and Gen X audience. Jenna Ortega still fresh from the success of Wednesday captured the Millennials, Gen Z, and Gen Alpha. In some ways, this is like Wednesday The Movie.

They made the human characters more human, and that’s cool. There is a twist that I would not spoil. I did not catch the twist early on, which is good, but when it happened, I saw a similar twist in another Tim Burton work, which made it feel recycled. The older folks I’ve met who are Beetlejuice fans who are not familiar with Jenna Ortega enjoyed her work.

Cocaine Bear (2023) TRAILER REVIEW: Ray Liotta, Keri Russell, Margo Martindale, Isiah Whitlock, Jr.

The trailer begins with an ambulance pull-up at a cabin house. It was a guy and a girl. They knocked on the door, and the guy medic shouted, “Medic!”. Inside the cabin, the house looks like it’s been ravaged by a tornado from the inside. There is a phone line hanging with blood on it. The 2 enter and the lady medic, seeing the chaos in the house, said, “Jesus! What is that?”

The guy medic slowly opened one of the rooms. You hear a soft growl as a large black bear reveals himself. The guy medic did the smart thing. He closed the door as slowly as possible. He said,“Beth, we should go.” But then BOOM! The door explodes as the Bear lays on top of the guy on top of the door.

It cuts to 2 guys watching TV in a bar. The TV newscaster said, “Millions of dollars worth of cocaine fell from the sky this morning in Knoxville, Tennessee.” There’s a quick cut to a plane flying at night and a man inside the plane. So that’s what happened. Cocaine fell from a plane, and that’s how, somehow, the Bear got it.

It is daytime, there’s just police and people everywhere. It looks like a suburban neighborhood. I’m assuming the cocaine fell everywhere in the Knoxville area. A guy who looks like the police chief played by actor Isiah Whitlock, Jr. said, “There’s more of this out there. They dumped it somewhere.” Trying to guess the plot here, there’s probably a syndicate with all the cocaine in the plane. But the authorities got intel and knew where they were landing. So they had to throw the cocaine from the plane (that rhymes) before they landed.

You cut to Keri Russell. I like her. In this movie, she looks like a regular Knoxville resident. She’s not diplomat Keri Russell. She is a mother who cares for her child. Keri is with 2 actors, a guy wearing flannel and a woman who looks like the park ranger. She said,“I’m looking for my daughter.”The woman said,“The forest is a dangerous place.”

You see 2 kids exploring the park. It’s probably Keri Russell’s kid. The girl said, “Hey Henry. Check it out. Something got into it. A deer, maybe?” They saw a military green pack with white powder all over it.

Inspired by True Events,the trailer said. The world truly is a crazy place sometimes.

Ray Liotta was talking to someone, “A lot of cocaine was lost.I need you to go and get it” Maybe he was part of the syndicate. He is no stranger to playing a crime boss.

You see Isiah Whitlock, Jr. look to his side as the Bear crawls. The Bear played with the pack for a bit but then swallowed the cocaine. “Oooh! Don’t eat that. Don’t eat that,”Isiah Whitlock, Jr. said. But the Bear swallowed the cocaine.“Let’s see what kind of effect that has on it.”

With the Bear lying on his back, it crawled backward. Great comedy. 2 guys tried to escape the bear.

In a separate scene, a guy told Ray Liotta,“The Bear, it f*ckin’ did cocaine. A BEAR, did COCAINE!”Gee, what could be the title of this movie? 😂

Going back to the scene earlier, the Bear then rolled over and stood up. The Bear ROARED as 2 scared guys tried to escape with their lives.

You see Keri Russell with a kid on top of a tree. The scared kid said, “There was a bear.”

“A Bear?,” Keri Russell asked.

“It was F*CKED!”the kid said.

“HEY!,”the park ranger interrupted the child. That’s inappropriate. But then you see the flannel guy fall and get pulled in the bushes. It’s the Bear. The Bear got the park ranger too.

The kid told someone,“You’re safe. Bears can’t climb trees.”

On the other tree, you see, what do you know, it’s the flannel guy. He survived the bear attack. But he responded to the kid,“Of course they can.”

You see Keri Russell hiding behind a tree as the claws of the Bear grab the tree. For a second, I think the Bear tried to climb the kid’s tree. But then a very fast Bear quickly ran and climbed the tree of the flannel guy. I guess he’s not gonna survive the Bear. Thankfully, you see Keri Russell and the kid running away.

A Series of Quick Cuts:

It’s nighttime, you see the Bear ROAR on top of a waterfall.

You see the Bear climbing out of the cabin.

The Bear blew white powder out of its nose. The 2 kids SCREAMED.

You hear the voice-over of Isiah Whitlock, Jr., “Apex predator…”

Keri Russell cocking a gun.

“…high on cocaine…”

It’s very dark. I think the kids jumped down the waterfall.

“…out of its mind.”

Flannel guy is dead as the Bear eats his bloody severed leg.

The Bear “hugging” a man on his head.

The Bear just face-planted on the ground. It’s having a crash.

“Oh man. You f*cked,”Isiah Whitlock, Jr. said.

The Bear runs as it smashes one of the wooden park signs.

“What the F*CK is wrong with that Bear!?,” it’s the female medic from earlier driving away with the ambulance. The 2 medics survived. But then you see the Bear running as fast as it can as it chases the ambulance. The park ranger is actually inside the ambulance. She is the patient. Even on a stretcher, she tried to shoot the Bear. The Male medic shouted, “BETH, SPEED UP!,” as the fast Bear ran towards them. You then get the iconic slow-motion shot of the Bear jumping towards the ambulance.

Himala {Miracle} (1982) Philippines TRAILER REVIEW: Nora Aunor, Gigi Dueñas, Laura Centeno, Spanky Manikan, Joel Lamangan, Ishmael Bernal

For me, this is the Greatest Filipino Movie of All Time. The trailer begins with 3 people walking up a mountainous desert. You then see a guy call out,“Elsa.”Elsa is played by A-list Filipino Actor Nora Aunor. Elsa has his hands clasped in prayer and her eyes closed in a full trance as she looks up to the heavens. The guy tries to shake Elsa, but she is in a trance. Upon opening her eyes, she said, translated in English, “I saw the Virgin Mary. There was light coming out of her. It’s like the sun made her a dress.”

You then see hundreds, maybe thousands, of people walking up a road. I think they are going up the mountain too. These are regular Filipinos of different ages. But the mood is festive. You see vendors on the side of the road. It’s very hot and humid in the Philippines. Some people have umbrellas. There’s even a balloon vendor. You see a woman with no legs walking with her hands along with the mass of people.

Elsa’s voice-over continued, “She said, the day will come that all the sick people would come to me and I could heal them.” You see Elsa touching the face of a man who looks like he has cataracts in both eyes.

You cut to a Catholic Priest conducting mass and we hear his voice-over,“God will not make a miracle to cover people’s lack of faith.” You also see Elsa praying over some oil or liquor on a bottle. Elsa was also outdoors with eyes closed praying in trance again. She is in all white along with followers behind her also wearing all white. You then see Elsa now has a crowd of people and long lines around her. She is healing the sick people in town, just like she said.

You see a man kneel in front of Elsa. He said, “I saw the Virgin Mary! I saw the Virgin Mary! The Virgin Mary is talking. There she is.” But then he laughed at Elsa’s face. Maybe the town is also 50–50 with the Miracle of Elsa. Even the priest was vague earlier. He said that God will not make a miracle if people lack faith. Is the priest implying that the town lacks faith? And if so, why would there be a miracle in town?

Elsa comes out of her Nipa Hut with 2 “disciples”, one older and one younger woman. The crowd shouted,“Elsa! Elsa!,”before running towards her. She’s like a celebrity now. Elsa’s voice-over said,“Not just the wounds of the body, but also the wounds of the soul.”

You see 2 men and a woman walking. You hear the voice-over of a woman. I believe it’s actress Gigi Dueñas. I think she’s retired now. She didn’t make movies or shows anymore after the 80s. She said, “You are selling them a miracle.” Oh, wow! Maybe Gigi Dueñas can smell the BS in all of this. Elsa is just “selling” the Miracle to people. My country, the beautiful Philippines, is a religious country. 90% of the population are Christians and 86.5 million are Catholics. However, I don’t think this is a “Christian Movie.”

Elsa responds, “We are helping people.”

“You have many followers, but you have no friends,”Gigi Dueñas said. BTW, that one hits deep in 2025 with our influencer and content creator-driven world.

The screen goes black. When it came back, the mass of people were now wearing all black. A crying woman approached Elsa, “You KILLED my child.” You see a child who is clearly in AGONIZING pain. But he/she is not in a hospital. It looks like they are in Elsa’s hut. She’s just scrubbing the child’s stomach. Oh God. This is the problem with religious healers. They promise to heal using prayers and faith. But at some point, someone would get hurt or die. But Elsa is mourning and crying like everyone else. She is remorseful. I think the child who died is someone close to her.

But then you see Elsa, with her black dress, standing in an open field. Talking to someone, her voice-over said, “You are the one who is sick, not the people.” She is wearing black. This could be after the burial. She is blaming the sick person. She is saying YOU are sick, not the people. That doesn’t sound like contrition or repentance to me, even if somebody already died.

A Series of Quick Cuts:

You see Elsa kneeling on the desert soil with her hands clasped in prayer and eyes closed as she looks up to the heavens. But then you see blood coming out of her hands.

The large crowd piling around the mountain.

You see a woman with the dead child on her lap as she looks at Elsa with suspicion and apathy.

You see actor Pen Medina in the crowd waving. Then you see actress Laura Centeno, one of Elsa’s “disciples”, smiling. Maybe that’s a B-plot love story.

You see Gigi Dueñas playing with some kids with the backdrop of a beautiful Philippine Sunset.

The next part of the trailer is a BIG SPOILER ALERT. Stop reading now if you plan towatch Himala (Miracle).

Here’s what happened. You see the large crowd gathered on the mountain. One of Elsa’s followers seems stunned. Elsa is speaking on a microphone. Elsa cried and shouted,“There is NO miracle.” It cuts to the faces of many people STUNNED in the crowd. You then see an arm holding a gun pointed at Elsa on the stage. You hear the BOOM of the gunshot as the screen goes black. You hear people panicking and crying. It’s chaos.

You see the crowd of people on the mountain gathering around Elsa. As I said, she’s like a celebrity. You hear a woman talking on the mic shouting, “Let us show our faith to the Virgin Mary!” That must have been an earlier scene.

You see Elsa kneeling on the desert sand with arms wide open. You then see her with his hands clasped in prayer but her eyes are half open.

Watch Himala (Miracle).

Longlegs (2024) TRAILER REACTION: Nicolas Cage, Maika Monroe, Kiernan Shipka, Alicia Witt, Blair Underwood

“Don’t move,”the trailer begins with Maika Monroe pointing a gun and moving inside a room. The interior of the house has a white minimalist paint. I like it. But there is plastic in the entrance of the doorway. This might be a crime scene.

You hear the voice-over of a little girl,“Is it scary being an FBI agent?”

It cuts to a woman, I think a nun, inside a car covering her face with blood all over her hands. You hear an uncomfortable grasping sound like someone is drowning for air.

You see 3 police vehicles rushing to arrive at a crime scene. You see 2 people inside a police car. I think it’s Maika Monroe and actor Blair Underwood. Underwood said,“A letter was left with the bodies. We have ten letters like it, over the past thirty years.” You see Maika Monroe wearing an FBI uniform rushing to walk toward a house.

It cuts to the interior of a darkly lit room. You see hands remove the blankets but you don’t see what’s under the sheets.

“And all are signed with one word….”

Maika Monroe flipped to open a knife. You see her flipping through book pages as you see them flex this movie has a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. I feel like this is a great movie, but there has been a correction through the months. It is now 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Longlegs.”

You see Maika Monroe and Blair Underwood walking at night with flashlights walking towards a barn.

Maika Monroe said, “He’ll kill, and kill again.”

You see an unknown woman inside a locksmith shop. I only assumed this was a locksmith because there are no other products you can visibly see in the shop except for the rows of keys hanging on the left side of the screen. That’s kinda scary. I thought about this ever since I was a kid. So the locksmith potentially has a copy of everyone’s keys? From your house keys to your car keys, nothing is safe. Is that the side gig of good old Longlegs here? Is he the town locksmith?

And then you hear the voice of Longlegs for the first time, “Oh! There she is!” You also see a glimpse of half his scary face, but they cut it very quickly. Great editing. I’ve seen a few clips of this movie. You know it’s freakin’ Nicolas Cage. He is a big star. But Longlegs is still SCARY. He gives you a kind of fear that comes from deep down your GUT and spreads all over your body.

“You could have, made nice with me,…” Longlegs said. You see a woman covered in a black veil. You then see a young girl, who could be in her teens, uncover us, the POV camera. Behind her is a man and a woman, who could be her mom and dad. So in this scene, since it’s POV, are we supposed to be the woman under the black veil? BTW, this scene looks old-school, like it’s from the 50s or 60s. You then see a “relaxed” woman bent over as a deranged-looking guy SMASHER her with an axe from behind. I don’t think it’s Longlegs. I think it’s the mom and dad from earlier. Did the dad smash the mom with an axe? Did Longlegs come from a deranged family? Is Longlegs the “woman” under a black veil? So many questions. I love it. Longlegs continued, “…but you didn’t.”

A child wearing blue and red clothes but you can only see their mouth. The rest of their upper head is cut off. I’m serious. There’s also smoke coming out from the head. This one felt out of place from everything so far. It looks like a sci-fi scene from 3 Body Problem.

Maika Monroe quickly pointed the gun at us.

Maike Monroe was out of breath with a small dash of blood in her head. It looks like she survived a chase or a fight.
