Road work ahead: Watch for these 15 construction projects in central Pa. (2024)

Whether you're traveling for work or fun this summer, be prepared for road work.

The state Department of Transportation recently released a list of projects on major roadways, including Interstates 78, 81 and 83, whichhave been ongoing or are getting underway.

Overall, PennDOT reports thatnearly 100 projects will be under construction in south central Pennsylvania this year.

Here are some bigger projects drivers can expect to see in the region:

Cumberland County

I-81 resurfacing project

Crews are working on resurfacing a 12.3-mile section of Interstate 81.

The $26.5 million project stretches from the Franklin County line to the Kutz Road bridge in Penn Township, Cumberland County.

It includes the removal of asphalt, base repairs, paving and minor bridgework on the highway in Southampton, Shippensburg, South Newton and Penn townships.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Company, Inc., is doing the work, which is expected to be finished by October 2022.

Dauphin County

I-81 sound wall project

Crews are placing sound walls along I-81 between I-83 Exit 70 and Mountain Road in Dauphin County.

It's a nearly $9 million project being done byDeblin Inc. of Mechanicsburg.

The project also includes drainage improvements, shoulder widening, new guide rail, signs and more.

Work is expected to be completed in November.

I-83 project in Harrisburg area

Work continues on I-83 just east of the City of Harrisburg, but it is expected to be finished this year.

The $104.7 million project has involved widening and rebuilding a 2.77-mile section of the highway from south of Exit 48 for Union Deposit Road to Exit 51 for I-81.

Crews have been replacing mainline bridges, widening an existing culvert at Slotznick Run andconstructing new retaining and sound walls in the area.

J.D. Eckman, Inc. of Chester Countyis the contractor on the project.

Route 22 resurfacing

A 6.1-mile stretch of Route 22 is getting a makeover.

The $13.5 million resurfacing project stretches from the City of Harrisburg to Route 225 in Dauphin borough.

The work includes concrete base repairs, concrete patching, removing material,resurfacing, tree removal, and minor drainage improvements.

Hempt Bros., Inc., of Camp Hill is the contractor.

The project is expected to be finished in August 2022.

Franklin County

Main Street improvement

Main Street in Greene Township is getting a makeover.

The $5 million project involvesreconstructing 1.5 miles of Main Street in the village of Scotland.

The work involves base repairs, drainage installation, resurfacing, curb and sidewalk installation, and more.

Cottles Asphalt Maintenance ofEverett, Pa. is the contractor.

The project is expected to be completed by October 2022.

Lancaster County

Route 222 resurfacing

Crews will be resurfacing 4.34 miles of Route 222 in northern Lancaster County.

The $6.3 million project includes base repairs, concrete patching, paving, and drainage work.

The work extends from the Mohler Church Road overpass in Ephrata Township to the Pool Road overpass in West Earl Township.

New Enterprise Stone and Lime Co., Inc. is the prime contractor.

The project is expected to be completed in July 2022.

Route283 interchange improvements

A widening and reconstruction project has been underway on Route283 at the Route722 interchange.

The $18.5 million project includes widening and reconstruction of State Road through the Route 283 interchange, replacementof the Route 722 bridge over the highway and rebuilding four interchange ramps.

A bridge on State Road overthe Amtrak railroad line also is being replaced.

New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co., Inc. is doing the work, which is expected to be completed by the end of August.

Lebanon County

I-78 and I-81 pavement preservation

A $5.5 million project is getting underway to help preserve 14 miles of pavement along I-81 and I-78in Dauphin and Lebanon counties.

In Lebanon County, the work limits are as follows:

  • I-78 between the Route 72 overpass and the I-81 interchange.
  • I-81 South from just north of the I-78 interchange to near the Indiantown Gap Road overpass.
  • I-81 North in the area of Route 934 (Exit 85)
  • I-78 (westbound) to Route 22 (Exit 8), which includes full shoulder replacement of deteriorated areas along the ramp.

In Dauphin County, the work limits are:

  • I-81 South between the East Hanover rest area near mile 79 to about one mile east of Mountain Road (Exit 72).
  • I-81 North just east of Mountain Road (Exit 72)to just east of Route 39 (Exit 77). It includes a one-mile break in the area of Sandy Hollow Road.

J.D. Eckman, Inc., of Chester County is the contractor.

The project is expected to be completed by July 2022.

Roundabout coming to Route 241

Crews are building a roundabout and makingother safety improvements along Route 241 in North Cornwall and West Cornwall townships.

The roundabout will be built at the intersection of Route 241 and Rocherty Road. Crews also will be realigning an S-curve on Route 241 between Creekside Drive and Mill Road among the planned improvements.

It's a $3.4 million project that started in the spring.

Pennsy Supply Inc. of Harrisburg is the contractor, and the project is expected to be completed in October.

York County

I-83 Exit 4 improvements

A new diverging diamond interchange at I-83 Exit 4 is expected to soon be operational.

Theinterchange has been taking shape, withcrews now constructing the south side of Route 851. They recently paved the southbound on-ramp.

The diverging diamondis expected to fully open to traffic by the end of June or beginning of July, according to Shrewsbury borough's Facebook page.

The $29.9 million project has been under construction since the spring of 2019.Kinsley Construction is the contractor.

It's one of the first interchanges of its kind in central Pennsylvania.

I-83 resurfacing north of York

A project to resurface I-83 in northern York County is expected to get underway later this year.

The project will stretch from Locust Lane to Canal Road.

The ramps at the Route 238 interchange will be paved, too.

PennDOT recently opened bids for the project, and J.D. Eckman Inc. appears to be the lowest bidder at nearly $5.3 million.

Market Street bridge replacement

A section of East Market Street in the area of I-83 will be closed to trafficfor a bridge replacement.

The $6.4 million project, which will be handled by Clearwater Construction Inc., is expected to start with pile work late this summer or early fall.

The detour of Route 462 is scheduled for spring of 2022.

The aging Route 462 bridge crosses Mill Creek between Belmont Street and North Hills Road. The road will be shut down for the replacement rather than doing the work in phases, which would take about a year and a half.

About 26,000 vehicles travel itdaily, and commuters will see lengthy detours.

I-83/North George Street ramp work

Work continues to relocate the North George Street entrance ramp at I-83 Exit 22.

The$12.4 million project involves moving the ramp farther north so that drivers have a longer acceleration lane to get onto the highway.

It's one of the early action projects that is being done in preparation for widening the highway from four to six lanes between the Mount Rose Avenue and North George Street interchanges.

Kinsley Construction is the contractor, and the project is expected to be finished by October 2022.

I-83 Mount Rose interchange

Speaking of Mount Rose, it wasn't mentioned on PennDOT's list, but work continues on finishing up the long-delayed project.

Final paving of the entire project may begin as early as next week, a PennDOT spokesman said. However, the contractor has not provided the agency with a revised completion date.

In addition to final paving, other work that needs to be finished includes final pavement markings, installation of permanent signs and traffic signal components.

Tutor Perini, the parent company of the contractor, Cherry Hill Construction, said last month that it's progressing "as expeditiously as possible."

The project was expected to be finished in 2018.

Route 15 improvements

A $19.4 millionproject along Route 15 in northern York and Adams counties is underway to help improve safety.

Pushed back in 2020, it will help to make changes at dangerous intersections in the Dillsburg area. The work stretchesfrom south of Dillsburg in York County to south of York Springs in Adams County.

The improvements will include closing some medians, prohibiting left turns, and redirecting traffic to newcul-de-sacs at County Line Roadthat will allow traffic to make special U-turns.These also have been referred to as "Michigan lefts."

The highway will get a new coat of asphalt, too.

Hempt Brothers of Camp Hill is the contractor.

The project is expected to be finished in August 2023.
